The Apothecary
Miniature potion bottles and a handcrafted cupboard inspired by comfort, ritual and old apothecaries.
This workshop combines reflective creative practice with tactile mixed media techniques to create a miniature apothecary cupboard filled with personalised “remedies” for difficult days. Participants work with recycled bottles, cardboard construction, paint, tissue paper and small embellishments to build an aged collection of potions, tonics and comforts inspired by self-soothing rituals and emotional wellbeing. The workshop is suited to community groups, wellbeing programmes, retreat settings, libraries, creative festivals, youth projects and intergenerational spaces. It works particularly well in calm indoor venues where participants can settle into a slower, detailed making process over one or two sessions.
I collect gentle remedies for difficult days
A cabinet of comforts
The workshop begins with a gentle guided meditation inspired by traditional apothecaries, old remedies and quiet forms of care. Through reflection and journalling, participants consider the small things that help soften stress, exhaustion, sadness or overwhelm. Rather than approaching these ideas directly or clinically, the session frames them playfully through the language of potions, tonics and remedies. Journalling takes the form of vintage-style potion labels where participants transform comforting habits, memories or routines into imaginative bottle names and handwritten “prescriptions.” Optional discussion and reflection can open conversations around care, rest and personal coping rituals in a light and accessible way.
Layers, textures and tiny details
Participants work with recycled miniature bottles and cardboard mailbox-style boxes to create a small cupboard with shelves and opening doors. Bottles are textured using tissue paper and diluted glue before being embellished with twine, lace, charms and beads. In the second session, layered acrylic paint techniques are used to create an aged apothecary appearance, followed by metallic or glitter highlights to enhance texture and relief. The cupboard itself is constructed from cardboard and detailed with either slatted or framed door designs to create a simple wood-like effect. No previous experience is necessary and the process is guided step-by-step while still allowing space for personal interpretation, colour choices and individual storytelling.
Small remedies to take home
By the end of the workshop, each participant has created a miniature apothecary cupboard filled with personalised potion bottles and labels. Every cabinet develops its own atmosphere through colour, textures, wording and decorative details, ranging from playful and whimsical to quiet and reflective. Alongside the finished object, participants leave with a collection of visual reminders connected to comfort, care and the small rituals that help bring steadiness during difficult moments.
