Solid Sphere
A hands-on session for participants who enjoy working with their hands and watching a shape slowly take form. Suited to community groups, wellbeing programmes, retreat settings and creative festivals, it works well indoors or out, in a studio, community space or garden setting. Familiar fabric is given a second life here, wrapped around a simple form and set until it holds its own weight.
I can turn what once felt temporary into something lasting
fRom soft to solid
The workshop begins with a short guided meditation, settling attention and introducing the idea of permanence, how something soft and temporary can become fixed and lasting. Through journalling and quiet reflection, participants consider their own habits and changes, built step by step like stepping stones. Optional discussion can open conversations around what it takes to make something last.
Wrapped, dipped and shaped
Old sweatpants, hoodies, fleece blankets, towels or other soft absorbent fabric are cut into one long strip, the same way as cutting t-shirt yarn. Each strip is dipped in a thinned cement mix and wrapped by hand around an inflated beach ball, building an open, lattice-like structure rather than a solid shell. No previous experience is necessary and the process is guided step by step, with plenty of room for personal interpretation in how each layer is wrapped.
Ready for the garden
By the end of the workshop, each participant has created a hand-formed concrete garden orb, unique to the hands that shaped it. Every orb develops its own open, lace-like pattern through how it was wrapped. Participants leave with a tactile piece for their garden or outdoor space, and a reminder of the workshop’s theme, that what begins soft and temporary can be shaped into something that lasts.
